Welcome to our new Commissioner!

Commissioner Glenn Micallef
Body

We have a new European Commissioner – Glenn Micallef – who will work on children’s rights, including child participation. He took over this responsibility from Vice-President Dubravka Šuica in December 2024.

It’s exciting to have Glenn Micallef as our Commissioner for the next five years. He is the youngest Commissioner of the College, the youngest ever Culture Commissioner, the first Intergenerational Fairness Commissioner and the first young Youth Commissioner ever.

As an even younger person, he was already actively engaged in youth democracy, sport and cultural organisations.

So, it’s great that he will be looking after topics such as intergenerational fairness, youth, culture and sport – which includes rights of the child. Working for the benefit of children and young people across Europe.

Getting to know Commissioner Glenn Micallef

‘I’ve seen the videos of the Platform’s meetings, and I can’t wait to get involved! Seeing so many of our dedicated youngest citizens helping to shape the EU for themselves, and future generations is so inspiring.”

Commissioner Micallef, who is 35 years old, comes from Malta, has been studying and working with the EU for many years and is passionate about the EU. He speaks Maltese, English and Italian.

He studied Commerce, and European Politics, Law and Economics and did a traineeship at the European Parliament. After that he went back to Malta and worked in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

In 2020, he was named as Head of the Secretariat and Advisor on EU Affairs for the Maltese Prime Minister. And now he is back in Brussels as a Commissioner!

As a former football player (and still ardent supporter!), runner and swimmer, he is also a big sports fan and was vice president of the Żabbar St. Patrick Football Club in Malta.

Glenn’s favourite pastimes include taking long walks with his dogs, exploring new recipes and enjoying sports like tennis, boxing, chess, football, and basketball.

How to become a European Commissioner?

Each country of the European Union nominates a person to work at the European Commission in charge of one of its departments or a special group of subjects. For five years, they lead the work of that department for all EU citizens, doing things like making and improving EU laws and policies.

After the 2024 EU elections, Malta nominated Glenn Micallef and the Commission President Ursula von der Leyen selected him as the Commissioner for Intergenerational Fairness, Youth, Culture and Sport.

Glenn then made a presentation to the European Parliament about how he is going to work on the main subjects and the Members of Parliament asked him questions. It’s like a long job interview with a very big group of people, which is also streamed live online for anyone who wants to watch!

The European Parliament then confirmed Glenn’s nomination – and that’s how he is now our new Commissioner.
